Best DJs in the World: Rankings History, Career Stats & Legends

Explore DJ Mag rankings and influential DJs, from Larry Levan and Carl Cox to Tiësto and Martin Garrix, with career context.

Ranking DJs is inherently subjective — but several credible annual polls provide decades of data. DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs poll, launched in 1993, is the largest public vote in electronic music, with over a million ballots cast annually. Resident Advisor's DJ Poll focuses on the underground, weighted toward techno and house artists. Together they offer a picture of both mainstream appeal and subcultural credibility — two very different metrics for 'best DJ in the world'.

DJ performing legendary set to crowd

Tiësto (Tijs Michiel Verwest, born 1969, Netherlands) won DJ Mag #1 three consecutive years: 2002, 2003, 2004. He was the first DJ to play a solo concert at Amsterdam's 25,000-seat Amsterdam Arena (2003) and the first to perform at an Olympic Games opening ceremony (Athens, 2004). After pivoting to EDM pop around 2012, his underground credibility declined — but his commercial reach (35M+ monthly Spotify listeners) remains unmatched in electronic music.

Armin van Buuren (born 1976, Netherlands) holds the record for most DJ Mag #1 titles: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012. His radio show A State of Trance (ASOT), launched in 2001, reached episode 1100 in 2023 and 40 million weekly listeners. Martin Garrix (born 1996, Netherlands) achieved DJ Mag #1 four consecutive years from 2016–2019, becoming the youngest ever #1 at age 19. His track 'Animals' (2013) remains one of the most-streamed EDM records in history.

DJ mixing at club with professional equipment

Carl Cox (born 1962, UK) is the most respected techno DJ in the world by critical consensus. His 15-year residency at Space Ibiza (1998–2012) is considered the greatest club residency in history. Unlike many peers, Cox has never compromised toward commercial pop — his sets remain technically demanding demonstrations of techno and house DJ mixing. Larry Levan (1954–1992) and Frankie Knuckles (1955–2014) are the two foundational legends: Levan's residency at the Paradise Garage (1977–1987) invented the modern concept of DJ as artist; Knuckles won the first Grammy for Best Remixer in 1997.

DJ Shadow (Josh Davis, USA) pioneered turntablism as fine art: his 1996 album 'Endtroducing…' was the first album constructed entirely from samples and entered the Guinness World Records. Jeff Mills, Nina Kraviz, and Amelie Lens consistently top the Resident Advisor underground polls, representing the artist-DJ model where technical mastery and artistic vision outrank commercial metrics. Revenue analytics: at the EDM peak (2012–2015), Forbes estimated the top 10 DJs collectively earned over $300M per year. Calvin Harris earned $66M in 2013 alone — more than any musician that year.

The global DJ equipment market was valued at $1.1 billion in 2023, growing at 5.4% annually. Streaming data adds a new layer to rankings: David Guetta has the most monthly Spotify listeners of any DJ (15M+), while underground artists like Amelie Lens or Ben Klock have 2–3M despite selling out 5,000-person clubs globally. These two metrics — streaming popularity vs. club credibility — map cleanly onto the two major ranking systems, and the best DJs are those who achieve both simultaneously.
